The influence of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and NaCl on a Catharanthus roseus suspension cell culture with high production of ajmalicine was investigated. Suspension cell cultures were treated with 100 mM NaCl or 100 μM MeJA or both for 3 d before harvesting, and measurements were then performed. NaCl treatment increased both the cell membrane permeability and ajmalicine accumulation. MeJA treatment promoted ajmalicine accumulation and maintained membrane permeability of cells under salt stress. However, a cumulative effect of both factors on the accumulation of ajmalicine was not found. Our results suggest that the higher ajmalicine accumulation in the medium after treatment with NaCl was associated with the cell membrane permeability.
