Summary form only given. When purchasing a new generator rotor, a clear understanding is required between the manufacturer and the purchaser, with regard to what the final product is to be and how it should perform. There is a need to clearly spell out what the rotor will and will not be capable of. Doing so creates an understanding of the level of performance and reliability expected by the purchaser and what is required in the manufacturing process to achieve it. In addition, to ensure a quality product is achieved, numerous tests, measurements and inspections are required in the manufacturing process. These also need to be clearly spelled out. The technical specification is a means for these requirements and expectations to be stated. A technical specification can take many forms, from simple to complex. A good specification however, is one that has sufficient detail to ensure that the desired level of quality is achieved, but not so extensive that it encumbers the manufacturer from doing what he does best. At the end of the day, the technical specification becomes legal a document, agreed upon by the supplier and the purchaser, that describes the equipment manufactured and the level of quality it is manufactured to. This paper will describe in detail the components of the technical specification, which attempt to accomplish this
