An ethanol-soluble crude flavonoid, obtained from corn pollen, was classified and purified through AB-8 macroporous resin column (1200×120mm), flowed by eluting the column with 40% ethanol, 60% ethanol, 80% ethanol. They have names corresponding to FPM-A, FPM-B and FPM-C. Polysaccharides also were extracted by hot-water from corn pollen and precipitated with 60% ethanol, 80% ethanol and 95% ethanol in turn, respectively noted as PPM-A, PPM-B and PPM-C. Further, their antioxidant capacities in vitro were evaluated by the assays of reducing power, scavenging hydroxyl radical, and scavenging superoxide radical. Antioxidant activity tests revealed that fractions all showed good capability of antioxidant. In the meanwhile, FPM-B and PPM-B exhibited the better potential for antioxidant activity. It suggests that corn pollen may be considered as a potential candidate for the natural antioxidants and possible health-promoting functional foods.
