Abstract :
The author describes a model for assessing and comparing the reliability of local area networks. The model parameters include the hardware and software components´ reliability, the network topology, and what demands user activities place on the network. Management of the network resources can also be considered in the model by the way it affects the network topology, user interactions, and the importance assigned to various subgroups being able to communicate. The model treats some failures as being more important than others. It can be used to compare different network organizations and to assess the impact of proposed changes on network reliability
