Abstract
The author examines the T1 transmission standard evolution to its current form, and shows the limitations which its voice heritage place on T1 networks. Changes currently being implemented or planned are also discussed, since they will eliminate some of the limitations. Also examined is the evolution of the node equipment used in T1 networks. Finally, other changes in process, such as ISDN (integrated services digital network), T3, and SONET (synchronous optical network), are explored
