Abstract
The characteristics of vacuum arcs are greatly related to the gap length. In short gaps, the critical current of anode spot formation is lower than that in long gaps. The higher arc voltage is also accompanied by the constriction of the arc column near the cathode. It is suggested that the fast accumulation of the electron and thermal effects in the local area of the anode surface contribute to anode spot formation and the instability of the arc voltage
