Abstract :
The authors present an analytical treatment and experimental study of coders for subband image coding. In particular, a generalized family of techniques based on two-dimensional adaptive linear prediction is introduced and shown to provide an effective method for low-bit-rate subband coding of monochrome images. Previous work in this area has included the use of separable APCM (adaptive pulse-code modulation) and DPCM (differential pulse-code modulation), which may be viewed as special cases of the generalized approach presented here. Several systems are discussed that minimize certain types of coding distortions in the reconstructed images. Computer simulation results are included to illustrate the subjective quality differences among these systems and the achievable performance gain. High-quality performance is achieved at bit rates below 0.7 b/pixel for 256×256 monochrome images
