Abstract :
This article examines the effects of displays on pilot conformance to automatic alerts. Closely-spaced parallel approaches were used as a case study. An experiment was conducted to examine subject reactions to potential collisions in different alert and display conditions. Results indicate that the use of both automatic alerts and traffic displays had a significant effect on when subjects decided the situation to be hazardous. Recommendations for alerting system design and realistic procedures for alerting system use are given
