Abstract
The ATM Forum defined the available bit rate (ABR) service as a method to provide rapid access to the unused network bandwidth. That service supports mainly data traffic which is insensitive to the transfer delay and the delay variation. For the above purpose, the key is how to design the size of the ATM switch´s buffer. At present, since most of the data traffic is generated by computers and has an on/off characteristic, we analyzed the ABR traffic source with that characteristic and deduced the equation with which the cell loss rate with multiple on/off traffic sources can be evaluated. Finally, an ATM LAN with 12 ports is simulated. For designing the ATM switch´s buffer with on/off ABR traffic, all results have direct significance
