Abstract :
An intense broadband near infrared (NIR) emission from Yb/Bi co-doped silicate glasses has been measured upon excitation with a commercial laser diode, which makes the glasses more attractive for their use in broadband optical fiber amplifiers. It is noted that the addition of Al2O3 into Yb/Bi co doped silicate glasses could remarkably enhance the luminescence intensity around 1220 nm. On the other hand, the NIR emission intensity decreased with the addition of Y2O3, La2O3 into the Yb/Bi co-doped silicate glasses. The optical properties of the Yb/Bi co-doped silicate glasses and the possible mechanism involved have been discussed.
