    A dense TiO2 coating has been dip-coated on porous NiTi alloys via the sol-gel route using tetrabutyl titanate (Ti(OC4H9)4) as precursor. The sol-gel derived TiO2 coatings with a controllable thickness covered not only the outer surface but also the inner surface of the porous NiTi alloy without blocking the pores. The immersion test in a simulated body fluid shows that the rates of Ni ion release from the TiO2 coated porous NiTi alloys of different porosity ratios decrease obviously compared with the uncoated one. There is also a remarkable increase in the apatite forming ability of the TiO2 coated porous NiTi alloy in a fast calcification solution.
