Abstract :
In this paper, the challenges of interconnecting large wind power penetration levels to the electrical power network are discussed based on some key case studies. Key planning considerations for interconnecting large-scale wind projects are discussed. For high levels of wind power penetration advanced wind farm technologies, energy storage, FACTS or HVDC transmission technologies may be required. Some case examples of both USA and European approaches are presented in this paper and the interconnection feasibility of a 6000 MW offshore and 2000 MW onshore wind farms are discussed as case studies.
