Abstract :
Automatic/unmanned control has been envisaged for entry/exit gates at tollways in Japan. It has been determined that the best way to classify the various vehicles at the toll gates is to read the classification number on the upper side of the license plates. An advanced system using image analysis has been developed, which is applicable to actual facilities on a commercial basis. It is already being run in good condition at as many as 50 entry toll gates. A remarkably high accuracy of recognition rates of more than 99% has been achieved
