The applicability to use the method of metal adsorption followed by selective extraction for the determination of heavy metal, Pb and Cd, adsorption contributions of natural surface coating components was tested in this study, by comparing this method with the traditional method of selective extraction followed by metal adsorption. Results indicated that compared to the method of extraction before adsorption, the concentration of Pb and Cd on each component of surface coatings used the method of adsorption before extraction was lower, and near to the detection limit. The very weak adhesion of Pb and Cd onto surface coatings was the main reason, while the extractant reagents removed Pb an Cd in specific adsorbing phases, the Pb and Cd adsorbed on other components was removed too, so the adsorption before extraction was not suitable for the studies concerning metal adsorption to surface coatings in the laboratory. However it is suitable for the studies concerning the enriched heavy metal distribution in different components of surface coatings when they were developed in natural water.
