Abstract
We use symbolic techniques to detect determinism in a time series. We apply it to simulated chaotic time series and stochastic process (noise), as well as EMG signals. Our study shows that the symbol spectrum can be more useful than the power spectrum in characterizing a time series underlying a certain dynamics, and it is also robust to noise
