Abstract :
A novel 3-axis gradient set and RF resonator for orthopaedic MRI has been designed and constructed. The set is openable and may be wrapped around injured joints. The design methodology used was the minimization of magnetic field spherical harmonics by Simulated Annealing. The constructed set generated maximum of 12 G/cm with a linear region of 12 cm, conforming closely with theoretical predictions. The set is currently being used in the authors´ 2 T medical scanner and knee images are included in this paper
