Abstract
This paper shows that traditional methods for designing PID controllers can be related to robust H∞ control. In particular it is shown that the specifications in terms of maximum sensitivity and maximum complementary sensitivity are related to the weighted H∞ norm introduced by Glover and McFarlane (1989). It is also shown that the Vinniecomb metric can be used to classify the classes of systems that can be stabilized with the design methods in Astrom et al. (1998) and Panagopoulos (1998)
