Abstract
The design of variable-frequency drives above 250 HP is considered. The author elaborates on various problems associated with the power circuit, the auxiliary power supply, and the controller design specific to high-power variable-frequency drives. The discussion is based on the PWM (pulse width modulation) type of drive, as this is presently the most popular choice. Solutions are proposed, and an effort is made to predict future trends.<>
