Abstract :
The evolution of the distributed computing environment now in use at the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering is described. Established as a small Unix network of Sun Microsystems workstations in the fall of 1986, it now supports a highly heterogeneous configuration of workstations for use by undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff. The principal issues described include the desired functionality of the system, the constraints imposed on the design of the network, the initial design and implementation, and the current status
