Activated carbon was modified with potassium permanganate. Adsorption capacity of chromium(VI) onto the modified activated carbon was investigated in a batch experiment system. The effect parameters studied include adsorption time, dosage of activated carbon, pH, and initial concentration of chromium(VI). Modification of potassium permanganate improve the adsorption efficiency of chromium(VI) on activated carbon by nearly 50%. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm were used to describe the adsorption equilibrium studies at different temperatures. Langmuir isotherm shows better fit than Freundlich isotherm in studied temperatures. The result shows that the modified activated carbon can be efficiently used for treatment of water containing chromium.
