Degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution by gamma irradiation were investigated. The factors that affected methylene blue degradation efficiency were examined. The results obtained showed that methylene blue concentration decreased with increasing absorbed dose, when methylene blue initial concentration was 30 mg L-1 and 1.5 kGy was selected as the absorbed dose, methylene blue degradation value was 98.5%. The addition of 1.0% H2O2 restrained methylene degradation process, but 0.2% H2O2 enhanced the degradation of methylene blue. The presence of CO32-, t-BuOH and thiourea inhibited methylene blue degradation process. The pH value can affect the methylene blue degradation, the degradation efficiency was higher under acidic conditions than in neutral and alkaline media.
