Rural residential sewage accounts for a significant portion of pollutant loads to the aquatic ecosystems in China. Although municipal sewage treatment technologies have been well developed, the sheet cost makes it infeasible to treat rural residential sewage through centralized systems, which is the case even in developed countries such as U.S. The tower earthworm ecofilter system is one promising on-site sewage treatment technology that has already seen wide applications in various rural regions of China. Demonstration projects show that the technology has the advantages of high pollutant removal rates as well as low cost and maintenance need. Nevertheless, many rural residents as well as local authorities have yet acknowledged rural sewage´s significant impacts on the water environment. There is still much difficulty to the mass implementation of the technology in China.
