Galactomyces sp. which can produce flocculating substances was isolated from activated sludge. The growth of the strains, flocculating rate and pH at different times during the culture of the strains were studied. The production of bioflocculant by Galactomyces sp. was associated with the cell growth. The flocculating rate for kaolin suspension was higher than 90%. The flocculating experiment showed that whatever in acidic or alkaline condition, bioflocculant had high efficiency with small dosage when dealing with kaolin suspension. The results of distribution of the flocculating activity showed that the active ingredient of bioflocculant existed mainly in free-cell supernatant. Bioflocculant was partially purified by cold acetone. Qualitative analyses of the bioflocculant showed that it might contain hexosamine, ketose The bioflocculation also had high turbidity removal ratio when treating in wastewater and soil suspension.
