Shallow groundwater might be contaminated by original production activity. Thus, it is necessary to investigate groundwater contamination and assess environmental risk, to estimate whether to remedy groundwater. In the paper, groundwater contamination in some certain area of Shougang Group was investigated by physical-chemical analysis. Groundwater environmental risk was assessed by Nemerow pollution index. Contaminated resource was analyzed. Groundwater contamination treatment based on environmental risk and cost-effectiveness analysis was brought forward. Key words: Brown field, Shallow groundwater, Environmental risk assessment, Nemerow pollution index, Environmental risk treatment pattern In order to fulfill the promise of "2008 Green Olympics", it was decided to remove Shougang Group and finish the task by the end of 2010 by the State Council. For the original site of Shougang Group, that is brown field, reuse is the only certain choice to fulfill sustainable development. Lots of smoke and waste residue would be produced during the production of steel enterprise. These materials would enter into soil by rain infiltration, and then to contaminate phreatic aquifer. Besides, there are many underground pipes of steel enterprises. Once leakage occurs for pipes are corroded and damaged, groundwater would be threatened by contamination. Thus, it is necessary to study the contamination prevention shallow groundwater affected by steel enterprise.
