The capacity of 15 indoor ornamental plants in removing toluene and xylene were investigated, using sealed fumigation chamber method. And the chlorophyll content, plasma membrane permeability, MDA content and POD activity were measured to assess the plants´ tolerance to the toluene and xylene stress. The results showed that all of the 15 plants can absorb toluene and xylene, among which Pelargonium hortorum, Chlorophytum comosum, Scindapsus aureum, Pelargonium odoratissmum, Neottopteris nidus, Commelina communis, Zebrina pendula showed high capacity in absorbing toluene and xylene. After toluene and xylene fumigation treatments, different plants showed different morphological and physiological changes. The plants which had high resistance to toluene and xylene in this experiment were Rhododendron hybrida, Calathea makoyana, Radermachera sinica, Euphorbia pulcherrima, Kalanchoe blossfeldian, et al.
