A biotrickling filter on pilot-scale was experimented to treat gas with low concentrations of styrene to explore the major controlling factors and purification mechanism. The gas flow was 250-1200 m3/h; the concentration of styrene was 20-120 mg/m3; the retention time was 0.8-4.3s. It was shown that the purification process is dual control process dominated by mass transfer and biodegradation; the mass transfer was controlled by the gas film, not liquid film between the biofilm and gas. The removal efficiency of styrene decreased while the load increased; the removal rate increased while the concentration and the gas flow increased. In the range of 80-100 mg/m3, removal rate tend to stable. Also, the treatment was impacted by other factors such as temperature, nourishment, spray liquid, characteristics of stuffing.
