Abstract :
Many of today´s distribution grids and their protection schemes were designed for vertical electrical power flow from higher voltage levels to lower voltage levels. These grids are more and more applied in a situation with an increased penetration of distributed generation. This paper focuses on the effect of increased penetration of distributed generation on voltage profiles in the distribution grid. Classical and power electronics based solutions to resulting problems are illustrated by means of simulations. It is shown that especially for cable networks series controllers can be useful. An overview is given of future research, also concentrating on other benefits of series controllers
