Abstract
Discusses the problems of manipulating flexible materials, and a general philosophy for enhancing the manipulative capabilities of automatic machinery for shoe upper assembly. The conclusions are illustrated with results of a research programme into the automation of stitchmarking. The automatic process is presented with sufficient knowledge of the orientation of the components to allow the process to be self-adaptive, thus relaxing the specification for physical manipulation by the machinery.<>
