Abstract :
The research reported in the paper is directed at the definition of a manufacturing materials control system for apparel manufacturing that can cope with raw materials of variable properties in real time as an integral part of the manufacturing process. It has required determining the important fabric properties in a variety of manufacturing contexts, measuring those properties for a variety of fabrics, developing on-line approximations to the critical property measurements, developing modeling and control procedures for the most critical manufacturing stages, and assembling these features into a system.<>
