The market for low cost automated biometric systems can best be described as emerging, with a vast range of diverse applications, just a few of which we touch on. Some of the new biometric technologies will doubtless fail in the competition for market share, just as the Bertillon system did in a previous time, and it seems unlikely that any single system will be pervasive across all applications. It is the author´s view, however, that fingerprint recognition systems will win a significant portion of the non police market, if for no other reason than the filtering through of technology from that large and valuable market.
