Abstract :
A special system of orthogonal coordinates for which the surface of an arbitrary three-dimensional scatterer locally coincides with a constant coordinate surface can be used to factor the scalar three-dimensional Helmholtz equation to get a one-way differential equation. Such a one-way operator is used in the on surface radiation condition (OSRC) method. This has been applied to three-dimensional scalar scattering by acoustically soft and hard scatterers and two-dimensional electromagnetic scattering by metallic cylinders. These results are extended to acoustic scattering by general acoustic scatterers and electromagnetic scattering by dielectric cylinders.<>
