Abstract :
Technologically it is feasible to put a subject in a state of mind in which he/she perceives to exist and act in a different environment than the actual real one. This state of mind is called telepresence, and the environment perceived is called virtual environment. To achieve telepresence, the sensory perceptions of the subject must be manipulated in such a way as to be in gross conformity with perceptions the subject would have in a corresponding real environment. The authors describe a system which is able to create virtual auditory environment with a high degree of perceptual authenticity. The system is based on the simulation of the sound field in a room exited by one or multiple sound sources, followed by an auralization procedure-a technique often referred to as binaural room simulation.<>
