Adsorption is one of the main mechanisms of soil contamination by volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VCHs). Static equilibrium adsorption experiments were carried out in the study to investigate the adsorption equilibriums of six VCHs to three typical dry paddy soils in Yangtze Delta Region of China . The adsorption equilibriums of the dry soils were fitted well with the Dubinin-Astakhov equation. The equation´s parameters were analyzed with the characteristic values of both the soils and VCHs. No apparent correlation was observed between the affinity coefficient (β) and the molecular volume of VCHs, but β tended to increase with the increase in the molecular polarizabilities of VCHs. A positive linear correlation was derived between the adsorption energy value (E0) of the reference compound (tetrachloroethylene) and the pore volume of radius less than average pore radius (V<;apr). The maximum adsorption volume of VCHs onto dry soil (W0) was independent on the specific surface area of soil, but positively correlated to the pore volume of radius less than 10 nm (V<;10nm). The adsorbed amounts of dry soils could be predicted by the Dubinin-Astakhov equation relating V<;apr, V<;10nm and β. The predicted values agreed well with the measured values, with R2 = 0.987.
