Abstract
This paper presents a general design technique for the power regulation of an optimal pulse-width-modulation (PWM) type superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) unit. The technique takes into account the existence of a nonzero lower limit in the power operating range of the SMES unit. It offers the best way by which the problem can be dealt with and therefore allows for maximum power utilization from the SMES unit. The technique is being used to control the power flows of the SMES unit for power system stabilization. The experimental results are also presented here
