Abstract :
A unique optical imaging instrument for fully 360 degree bioluminescence imaging (BLI) and multispectral fluorescence imaging and tomography (FMI/FMT) has been designed and constructed that can be incorporated into any dedicated unmodified small animal PET system with a minimum bore opening diameter of 125 mm. By way of example, an integrated setup for bimodal imaging will be described which has been tailored to the Siemens Inveon PET. The optical imager consists of a cylindrical (hexagonal) rotatable assembly of six microlens-based 25mm×100mm flat panel photon sensors and a variety of light sources for fluorochrome excitation. We present results in the form of simultaneously acquired phantom data as well as of two mouse imaging studies (BLI-PET, FMI-PET) that illustrate the capabilities of this novel approach. Further technical improvements are also presented and discussed such as a novel approach for calculating three-dimensional optical surface images from segmented emission PET data when a strong background signal is present (F18-FDG).
