The quality of vegetables and crops has been affected significantly due to Cd contamination in many regions in China. Chinese cabbage is an important vegetable and widely distributed in China. In this study, the Cd accumulation and its impacts on the chlorophyll content, dry weight and nutrient element uptake was assayed in seedlings of Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa subsp. pekinensis) exposed to 10-100 μM Cd for 7 d. The chlorophyll content and dry weight decreased significantly at 20-100 μM Cd. Cd treatments increased in roots and shoots with the increase of exterior Cd concentration while the transfer coefficient of Cd decreased. Cd treatments increased the uptake of Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn and P in roots; and in leaves Zn and P increased but Mn decreased. The results indicated that that Chinese cabbage is sensitive to high Cd and the nutrient balance of in plant cell can be disturbed by exterior Cd stress.
