An experimental swirling furnace of 0.2MW was built according to the basic properties of fly ash from municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerator. The melting tests were conducted in furnace to explore the melting properties of MSWI fly ash. The harmlessness and vitrification would be reached by swirling melting process. The problems of imperfect melting and easy choking are solved. The volume reduction rate of fly ash was above 85%. The fuel consumption rate is 8.0 liters per hour. Results show the melting furnace has the following advantages: high thermal efficiency, environmental benefit being dramatic, design being reasonable, running being stable. The design of the experimental system reaches the design parameters. The emission concentration of particulate matter is 813.21mg-Nm-3 in flue gas. The ringelmen blackness level is less than one-level. The emission concentration of SO2 is 263.70 mg-Nm-3. The emission concentration of NOx is 604.23 mg-Nm-3. The testing results of fly ash large-scale swirling melting treatments for MSW incineration would provide necessary theory reference. This research also develops a new way to utilize fly ash with good economy and society benefit.
