Abstract :
The future of the wireless communications industry is perhaps one of the most interesting areas in the 1990s. The market for wireless telephony is expected to increase dramatically during the 90s. It will be a real challenge to infrastructure manufacturers and network operators to meet the massive market growth and provide quality service. Personal communications is a new kind of mobility service which can be delivered in many ways with varying degrees of usefulness to the user. The paper focuses on the evolution of the UK personal communications network (PCN) market based on the current Groupe Speciale Mobile standards which will be the main driving force for the third generation cellular system. In addition, it defines how PCN can provide the catalyst to spark a new market for personal communications in both the business and residential market
