Red mud, which is also called Bauxite Residue, is a solid state industrial byproduct produced in the process of alumina extraction from bauxite. Dumping and accumulating the red mud will not only take up a lot of land but also pollute the environment heavily. Nevertheless, red mud has strengths such as stable chemical composition, great dispersion, high specific surface area and the stability in water. Thus, it is a wise choice to use red mud to prepare porous materials. In our paper, various red mud-based porous materials were prepared and characterized. We use sawdust, NaCO3 and powdered carbon as the pore forming agents to prepare the porous materials and use X-ray diffraction (XRD) to characterize the crystallization. The apparent porosities have been measured and we find that when the content of sawdust reaches 12.5%, the apparent porosity is 52.8%. It is the highest apparent porosity in these materials. Also, the sawdust is a kind of solid waste and this method is an effective way for both of the waste management.
