The effectiveness of rhamnolipid biosurfactant on the desorption of phenanthrene in marine sediment was compared with that of synthetic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS). The critical micelle concentrations (CMC) of rhamnolipid and SDS in sediment suspension was 111.6 and 1421.1 mg/L, respectively. Both rhamnolipid and SDS at high dosages (above CMC) greatly enhanced desorption of sediment-sorbed phenanthrene, whereas rhamnolipids was more efficient than SDS in desorption enhancement. The results suggest that rhamnolipid may be more effective than SDS in PAH-contaminated sediment remediation processes.
