Abstract
To introduce the subject of increased safety electrical apparatus for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, it may be useful and necessary for those engineers who are not familiar with European and IEC Standards to provide some guidance. Here, the author provides such guidance by: considering the CENELEC and IEC Standards in general and attempting to answer some of the questions relative to their status; and by considering the technical design and testing aspects of increased safety type `e´ explosion protection
