Abstract :
This paper explored the possibilities of monitoring the condition of a rotating paper cylinder made of a composite material. In addition, the paper studied the use of wireless data transfer in the demanding paper manufacturing environment. Part of that research included measuring electromagnetic fields near paper cylinders and the effects of rotational movement on a Bluetooth radio module. Short-range data transfer radio modules operating above the 1 GHz frequency were found to be most suitable for the typical operational environment of a paper factory. Finally, this paper also reports on experimental studies on strain monitoring using optical fibres containing fibre Bragg grating sensors embedded in a composite material during its manufacturing process.
