Abstract :
An automatic vehicle location (AVL) expert system has been developed at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, which has a lot of functions. All the functions require the support of a digital map. The goodness of the digital map and its data structure have a significant influence on the system functions and performance. The purpose of this paper is to design an effective digital map with a reasonable data structure, which has a friendly interface with the driver based on a stand-alone application. Several issues concerning the features of the Beijing road network, the graphic display, the zoom function design, the data structure design, etc., are discussed
