Abstract :
We discuss how the computational efficiency of a motion-compensated DCT coder can be improved, using the H.263 compression standard as an example. We begin by discussing the typical distribution of computational resources in such an encoder and outline the general areas which can most benefit from optimizations. Next, we introduce some optimization techniques that improve the performance but still conform to standard requirements. Finally, we discuss the kinds of performance tradeoffs that can be expected for such methods.
