Abstract :
It is shown that the ERS-1 SAR Image Mode data contains informations that can be used in an inversion scheme to solve the 180 degree ocean wave propagation ambiguity, provided they are properly processed into image cross-spectra. Furthermore, the cross-spectra is shown to be completely free of speckle yielding an improvement in the SNR as compared to the standard 3 look image spectrum of 20 dB. Based on these results it is recommended that future wave mode products (ERS-2) should be based on the image cross-spectrum rather than on the 3 look image spectrum
