Abstract :
A computer-controlled left ventricular assist device (LVAD) system is described in this paper. The system is controlled by a PC and a MCS-8098 single chip processer. Its implementor is a brushless DC motor. The inputs of the LVAD closed-loop system are the mean aortic pressure (A¯O¯P¯) and the cardiac output (CO) and the outputs are the stroke speed and distance of the assist blood pump. One of the two categories of control algorithm adopted in the system is adaptive control, which includes self-tuning PID control based on pole assignment and multi-variable self-tuning decoupling pole assignment control, the other is fuzzy control. The performance of this microcomputer controlled LVAD system has been demonstrated by in vitro experiment on a mock circulatory system. Following major changes in the mock circulatory system, the LVAD restores the system to the desired state. Several types of experiment show the effectiveness of the three kinds of advanced control method in the LVAD control
