Abstract :
Routes to chaos and the domains of chaotic behavior were investigated for the cAMP signaling in excitable cells. The dynamics of cAMP signaling in the cellular molds of Dictyostelium discoideum were described by a third order nonlinear system and the different modes of cAMP oscillation were analyzed using Lyapunov exponents and bifurcation diagrams to determine the chaotic regions and their sensitivity to changes into intrinsic parameters of the model. It was concluded that cAMP receptor desensitization plays a crucial role as one of the feedback mechanisms governing the transitions between periodic and chaotic behavior of cAMP concentrations
