Describes the evolution of programmable integrated circuit programming technologies and architectures, from the initial PAL and PLD devices to todays more complex field programmable gate arrays. Various commercially available programmable integrated circuits are used to illustrate the breadth of architectures available. Future directions for these architectures are also presented
