Abstract
Wireless sensor networks require energy efficient protocols to improve the network lifetime. MAC layer design is very critical for energy efficiency. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient MAC protocol called CL-MAC that applies routing and MAC layers jointly. In the proposed CL-MAC, by exploiting routing layer information to decide which nodes are involved in the actual data transmission, we solve the forced wake-up problem in the adaptive S-MAC. Simulation results show that the proposed CL-MAC protocol significantly improves energy efficient compared to the adaptive S-MAC.
