Abstract
We review the phenomena of splitting and regeneration of light fields inside self-imaging planar and rectangular waveguides. We describe several applications of the phenomena in the design of novel low-loss resonators with quasi-Gaussian output. We end by proposing several designs of fiber-coupled dual-mode waveguide interferometers that can give rise to ultra-small sub-wavelength fringe spacings.
